Our Scholars at home, at work, at school, and in the community…

As part of the Campus/Community Partnership for Health, 2003 TCF Scholar Sean Morgan (front center) had the privilege of meeting Loretta Hanes (right), whose inspirational story was illustrated with priceless artifacts handed down from the pre-Civil War era of slavery. Sean's experiences with the Hanes family is a perfect example of how community-campus training collaborations can educate medical students about the importance of service. Tasnim Aziz shows her school spirit with Bryn Mawr's mascot before heading off to class to learn about biological sciences. Two dedicated canners, Tiff Collins and 2007 TCF Scholar Rino Sato, raised money for the 4 Diamonds Fund, which supports children with pediatric cancer at the Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey. Danielle Falkowski, 2002 TCF Scholar, had an eventful summer. She won first place for her presentation at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology smooth muscle conference in Italy, has a submission soon to be published in the American Journal of Physiology, and was married to Len Trappanese on August 21, 2009. Best of luck to both Danielle and Len! Barbara Wilkinson, 2008 TCF Scholar, worked on congenital heart disease genetics research at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia over the summer before returning to her pre-med course work at Middlebury College. On her service trip to Jamaica, Monica Winshel volunteered at an orphanage for children with special needs and children who were HIV positive. She also spent one day at a school where the children invited her to learn some Jamaican games and songs. 2005 Scholar Jaclyn Griffith is already giving back to the community by volunteering at one of TCF's Teddy Bear Clinics. Jaclyn is pictured at Springfield Library with Katie Conley and her unicorn. Dylan Thorne-Fitzgerald participated in the University of Delaware's Summer Scholar research program which focused on retraining stroke victims to develop a symmetrical walking pattern. Shayne Bierman bursts through the basement door of the burning Brookhaven home in an attempt to quell the source of the blaze. (Picture courtesy of Rob Griffith) Parkside Fire Fighter Shayne Bierman works diligently to hose down the house to prevent the fire from spreading. (Picture courtesy of Rob Griffith) Ziqian Wang, eager to expand his knowledge in the medical field, spends his summers at the University of Pennsylvania research lab. Participation of our scholars is essential to our community activities. Pictured here at the Make-A-Wish fundraiser are scholars Amanda Vito, Annalise Penikis, Scott Kellett, Jen Delany, Steph Parcell, Monica Winshel, and Marie Pradel. Congratuations to Melissa (Furia) and Bill Reardon. 2009 TCF Scholarship recipient, Lauren Fox, staffed the TCF table throughout the day at the 2009 Health Awareness Day. Lauren and Brittany Stewart volunteered to make popcorn for the entire event at Health Awareness Day 2009! Brittany is a 2009 TCF Scholarship recipient.
